Create zones

You can better understand the concept of efficient organisation if you imagine your kitchen as five separate zones, each with its unique function. The kitchen is divided into several distinct areas: the cleaning area, the preparation area, the cooking area, the food storage area, and the non-food storage area.

Make it easy with your layout

The distance between the primary work stations should be minimised for maximum efficiency in any kitchen. The triangle formed by your refrigerator, stove and sink is the foundation of every efficient kitchen layout. It shouldn’t take too many steps to go from one point to the next on a well-designed triangular plan, but it shouldn’t be overly spacious either. To make the most of your kitchen’s storage space even if you can’t alter its layout, familiarity with the triangle is essential. Put the pots and pans away in the base cupboards next to the stove, and the dish soap and sponges close to the sink.

Organise your cabinets

To make your most used products easier to find, organise your kitchen cabinets such that the most often used items are at the front. Also consider the vertical dimension. Things like less-used bowls and glasses reserved for special occasions should be stored higher up in your wall cabinets, while your most-used dishes and glasses should be arranged so that they are within easy reach. Think about the kinds of meals you prepare the majority of the time as well. If you are a serious baker, you should keep your flour and measuring cups closer to the front of the cabinet, while other goods should be stored in the rear.
